Colonnade is heading down under to help further expand the FIBA Basketball World Cup competition worldwide. After its success with the Final Four court buildout, Colonnade was approached to contribute to the exhibition games in Melbourne, Australia, which are a precursor to the 2019 World Cup, hosted by China.
Between the logistics and the scale of these games, this job has our Venu+ team ready to set sail. Starting in May, Colonnade will begin pulling equipment for the court understructure from its Birmingham warehouse. In June, the equipment will take a six-week voyage by boat to Australia, where it will be waiting for the Venu+ team at the start of the late-August build.
Also unique to this job is that this professional basketball court deck will be built on top of a grass stadium field inside a historic outdoor arena with retractable roof. As Brett Shelton, Event Development and Operation for Colonnade, explains, “It is a rare thing for games of this magnitude to be played outside of a basketball arena, so it’s special.” The Colonnade team is ready to tackle a third continent. Be sure to follow along as we travel around the globe!
