Colonnade Delivers the BBVA Compass Iron City Showdown
For the first time in 12 years, the City of Birmingham and the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex will host an NBA basketball game. On October 2nd at the BJCC, the Houston Rockets will face off against the Memphis Grizzlies in the first preseason game of the year. The game is presented by BBVA Compass Bank in partnership with Faush Summit Entertainment, and Colonnade Group will execute every aspect of this singular event.
“Birmingham is home to BBVA Compass, and they’ve always been a company that finds ways to give back to their community,” notes Brett Shelton, Event Development and Operations for Colonnade. “They’re also involved extensively in NBA sponsorship, so this was a perfect opportunity to bring something special to Birmingham.”
While Colonnade Group has extensive involvement with basketball events like the NCAA Final Four, the Iron City Showdown poses a unique challenge in that, according to Shelton, “there is no recent historical precedent to this event. It’s a brand-new event in a venue that hasn’t hosted an NBA game for a long time. There’s no reference for signage, ticketing, parking, or even hotels. It’s a lot to consider, but it’s nothing we can’t accomplish.”
According to Shelton, “It’s also a unique project for us because it’s our event from A to Z, so we’re with the Iron City Showdown from start to finish.”
For Colonnade Group, the BBVA Compass Iron City Showdown also presents the humbling opportunity to build a home-grown event. While Colonnade serves clients across the country, it’s especially meaningful for their team to operate an event in and for its very own home town.
